Kartik Raj, Western Europe researcher, works on counterterrorism, extremism and populism.

Prior to joining Human Rights Watch in 2017, he worked for several years at Amnesty International as a campaigner and researcher on the European Union team, during which he worked on counterterrorism laws and policies across the EU, access to abortion for women and girls in Ireland and Northern Ireland, accountability for human rights violations in Northern Ireland's "Troubles," forced evictions of Roma, Travellers and migrants without regular status, and police ill-treatment and deaths in custody. Kartik previously worked as a caseworker in the West London office of the Refugee Legal Centre for refugees and migrants held in immigration detention.

Kartik graduated from Middlebury College with an A.B. (summa cum laude) in International Politics and Economics, and holds an M.A. in Political Science (International Relations and Political Theory) from the University of Minnesota. 

He is based in London and speaks English, Spanish and French.
