A girl kneels on the ground while displaying a box of cakes for sale

A 15-year-old girl, displaced from Silgadji village in Sahel region, Burkina Faso, has remained out of school, selling cakes, ever since armed Islamists raided and threatened her school in 2018. “We didn’t finish the school year,” she said. “Here [in Ouagadougou]... there were no places [in public schools]. Now each day, I sell cakes... I’d rather continue school.” Though her parents enrolled her two younger brothers in private school, they “don’t have the resources for all of us to go,” she said.
