Syinat Sultanalieva, Central Asia researcher for Human Rights Watch, works on Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, focusing primarily on human rights issues around freedom of assembly, freedom of association, freedom of speech. She also monitors the socio-economic and political developments in the two countries as pertinent to the observation of the human rights obligations of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Sultanalieva has worked extensively on LGBTI and sex workers’ rights in Central Asia, both as an activist and an international consultant, assisting in the movement building and development of institutional capacity in grassroots organizations of the region. Sultanalieva has a PhD degree in social sciences from the University of Tsukuba, Japan, where she has studied as a recipient of the MEXT Japanese government scholarship. Sultanalieva speaks English, Russian and Kyrgyz.
