Prior to joining Human Rights Watch, Yasmine was Executive Director of the multi award winning human rights organization, Rights and Security International. She held this position for 7 years during which time she built a dynamic organization with unparalleled expertise in national security and human rights, a global reach and sustained impact. During her tenure the organization successfully litigated and advocated on issues ranging from arms sales to Saudi Arabia, investigations into crimes committed by Government forces in Afghanistan and the unlawful detention of ISIL associated women and children in NE Syria. Under her leadership, the organization expanded in size and geographical scope and came to be respected as a leader in the fields counter terrorism, human rights and international peace and security.

Prior to this, Yasmine worked as a public international lawyer for the UK and Australian Governments and the UN. She worked as an Assistant Legal Adviser at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a Legal Officer at the Office of International Law, Australian Attorney-General’s Department and a law clerk at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the Serious Crimes Unit in Timor-Leste.

She started her career in Australia working on issues concerning asylum seekers and refugees. As part of this work, she established an NGO, Australian Refugee Support Group and worked with legal groups assisting asylum seekers in detention.

She is a Chevening Scholar, has an LLM in Public International Law from the University of London, and has taught public international law at the School of Oriental and African Studies and the University of Adelaide, South Australia. She also worked as an Associate to a Judge of the Supreme Court of South Australia and is qualified as a solicitor of England and Wales and a barrister and solicitor in Australia.
