Corrections to our publications

Human Rights Watch strives to maintain the highest level of accuracy in our reporting. This includes a commitment to correcting errors or clarifying facts that appear in our publications in a timely fashion. Corrections appear both on this dedicated webpage and at the bottom of the publication that contained the error.

We cannot reply individually to all corrections requests, but all such requests that specify the exact nature of the alleged inaccuracy and the publication (title, page number / web address and date) in which it appeared will be reviewed. If you believe you have found an inaccuracy in our materials, please contact us.

Errors contained in social media posts under Human Rights Watch and staff accounts will also be corrected in a prompt and transparent manner.

  • Iran: 2 Detainees Executed, 11 Await Imminent Execution

    January 23, 2024: This news release has been updated to reflect the correct name spellings for Abbas (Mojahed) Kurkur, Mansour Dehmardeh, and the Intelligence Detention Center. 

  • DHS OIG and CRCL Complaint Regarding “Digital Metering”

    April 17, 2024: This text has been edited to correctly contextualize publicly available CBP data on port of entry transfers since the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways final rule went into effect.

  • Tunisia: Cybercrime Decree Used Against Critics

    December 21, 2023: 

    This press release has been updated to reflect the correct arrest dates of opposition figures Chaima Issa and Sofiane Zneidi. 

     

  • Israel: Starvation Used as Weapon of War in Gaza

    12/18/2023: This news release has been updated to reflect the October date on which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel would not allow humanitarian assistance "in the form food and medicines" into Gaza through its crossings "as long as [Israel's] hostages are not returned." 

     

    1/15/2024: This news release has been updated to reflect the correct attribution for statistics provided regarding the damage and destruction to civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

  • Birth and Death Intertwined in Gaza Strip

    Correction, December 4, 2023: This dispatch has been corrected to reflect that the number of babies found dead on November 28 at Al Nasr medical complex was four, based on a December 3 news report. 

  • Israel/Gaza Hostilities Take Horrific Toll on Children

    This dispatch has been updated to remove a comparison between child deaths reported in Gaza by Gaza’s government media office and global child deaths in armed conflict verified by the United Nations.

  • APEC: Press China’s Xi on Human Rights

    An earlier version of this press release stated this visit is President Xi Jinping’s first visit to the United States since 2015. Xi made a visit to former President Trump at Mar-a-Lago in 2017.

  • “Working On Oil is Forbidden”

    11/7/23: On October 23, TotalEnergies (TE) wrote to Human Rights Watch (HRW) in response to HRW's October 6 letter. An earlier version of the report included HRW's October 6 letter in Annex A, but by error/due to an oversight it did not include TE's October 23 letter. TE's letter, as well as its "Statement on Human Rights Defender," is now included in the report's Annex B.

  • Hamas, Islamic Jihad: Holding Hostages is a War Crime

    Update 10/25/2023: This news release has been updated to reflect the correct spelling of Adva Gutman-Tirosh’s name and to indicate that Tom Louk is a woman. 

  • Tunisia: African Migrants Intercepted at Sea, Expelled

    10/10/2023: This news release has been updated to reflect that the Tunisian National Guard expelled migrants between September 18 and 20.
