The Hungarian government fails to respect the rule of law and human rights. Civil society organizations face legislative restrictions, while rights defenders and independent journalists are smeared by pro-government media. Academic freedom has been curbed and a top university forced out of the country. Government officials continue to engage in anti-migrant and xenophobic rhetoric including through publicly funded campaigns. Asylum seekers are detained and denied food in border camps despite several European court rulings ordering Hungarian authorities to resume food distribution.  They face violence during police operations to force them back to the border, and limitations on meaningful access to asylum.
